The Tan in Winter

No I am not talking about colouring one's skin and risking skin cancer but rather about one of Melbourne's institutions. The Tan Track is a 3.8 km long path around the perimeter of the Royal Botanical Gardens. These days it is in constant use by walkers, mums pushing prams, joggers and professional athletes. In the olden days it was originally a horse track for the city's affluent residents.

Ahubby is back into training after his recent hiatus. He will be joining his mates from Melbourne Tri Club, formally known as the Muffin Riders, for a jog/run around the Tan. From memory the quickest lap of the Tan was done in a little over 10 minutes by Craig Mottram in 2004. There are even annual Tan time trials . For the record Ahubby's quickest lap is 12 minutes 40 seconds. Today the gang are running around 24 kms. It is currently 7 degrees outside but feels like 4 degrees Celsius so hopefully they warm up fast.

If you are serious about your running ( or even your walking for that matter) you never, never, never run anti clockwise. The true Tan track runners always run up the infamous Anderson Street hill!

Oh yes. As a serious Tan walker (!) I agree...you only ever go UP the Anderson Street hill. Nearly kills me, but that's the point.

Ahybby has had a hiatus from running but is getting back into it with a 24k run. Something I will only ever dream about.

If I don't run for a couple of weeks I'm flat out running around the block let alone 5 k's.

Note to self-get more base girl.

Ronnie - he did make one concession today. Rather than run the 4km one way to the Tan he drove down( probably in the new car) as a 30 km plus run may have been too much!

And yet (shhh) our recent walk around The Tan was anti-clockwise. Actually, it was more of a drag (in more ways than one) for Padawan Learner.
